After journey to Scotland's biggest city Glasgow to meet the rest of the group*. Our wide-ranging tour starts by heading west through the beautiful scenery of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park to Kilmartin Glen. Here you’ll explore Scotland’s ancient past. With over 5,000 years of history laid out before you, you’ll be able to walk in the footsteps of the first Scots at Dunadd Hill Fort and the Temple Wood Stone Circle. Then it’s on the picturesque seaside town of Oban, home to Scotland’s best seafood!

Day 2 Gruesome Glens and the Hogwarts Express…

Day two takes you over the Connel Bridge through Appin to the haunting landscape of Glen Coe (scene of the terrible massacre of the MacDonald Clan). We’ll stop in Fort William; a town dominated by Ben Nevis—the UK’s tallest peak, then jump aboard the Jacobite Steam Train*. It’s one of the world’s greatest train journeys and will take you over the Glenfinnan Viaduct, made famous by the Harry Potter films. We’ll continue to the end of the line, Mallaig, a pretty fishing port, bustling but remote. You will have the opportunity to have an early dinner and enjoy some excellent seafood before taking a short ferry ride over the sea to Skye, where you’ll spend your second night.

Overnight: Skye

Day 3 A whole day to explore Skye…

You’ll have the whole of the third day to explore Skye’s mysteries and landscape with your knowledgeable driver-guide, they will ensure you get the most out of your time on the island based on the weather and group. Stops often include the Cuillin Mountains, Dun Beag Broch, the black houses, the Kilt Rock Waterfall, The Old Man of Storr and the Trotternish Peninsula, and of course the capital of the island, Portree.

Overnight: Skye

Day 4 Beautiful Castles and Mysterious Lochs …

We’ll leave Skye and head straight to one of Scotland’s most photographed castles, Eilean Donan* which you’ll have ample time to explore. You’ll stop at the pretty Lochside village of Drumnadrochit for lunch, before having the option to cruise on Loch Ness, look out for Nessie and visit Urquhart Castle ruin. We’ll then head to the south end of the Loch for our overnight stop in Fort Augustus.

Overnight: Fort Augustus

Day 5 Monster hunting, historic battlefields and home…

Today you’ll head to visit the battlefield of Culloden* the site of the defeat of the Jacobite forces. We’ll also have time to explore the nearby Clava Cairns, a group of Prehistoric Burial Cairns – fans of Outlander will love this location due to its similarity to the fictitious stone circle, Craigh na Dun. Then you’ll pass the stunning Cairngorm Mountains. On your way south you can choose to enjoy a wee dram at a local whisky distillery* or explore the picturesque town of Pitlochry before arriving back in Edinburgh or Glasgow.

Tour Reviews

We chose this tour because it covered a lot of ground in a relatively short period. It is a small group tour through the Scottish Highlands that included visits to the Isle of Skye, Culloden, a distillery, a ride on the Jacobite train (Harry Potter train), a boat ride on Loch Ness and a number of stops at various castles and numerous places for a wander "short walks.” We stayed in Oban, Skye, and Fort Augustus. The highlands are truly spectacular and our tour guide, Andrew, was the consummate storyteller. He made the highlands come to life. This trip was good value and the accommodations were generally good.

A friend and I took the five-day tour Highland Experience's Scottish Choice. What a fantastic time we had and our guide Andrew was very knowledgeable and what a wonderful storyteller! You felt you were right there back in the day of life in Scotland. From the tour itself to the Jacobite Steam Train, Loch Ness Cruise and Urquhart Castle but my favourite was Eilean Donan Castle as my friend and I have a personal connection with the castle. This trip was extraordinary and is a must for those that want to rediscover their roots or just see the Highlands and experience its culture. The sheer beauty and wildness along with Scottish hospitality was amazing.

I live in London and have been wanting to visit Scotland for ages - this tour was everything I hoped for and more, a really super introduction to the country. Andrew is an outstanding guide and driver, very user-friendly, and a great story-teller! The group were fantastic, I knew there'd be a mix of nationalities, but I didn't expect quite such a huge spectrum. The coaches were very comfortable, B&Bs were great, and someone even managed to lay on super weather, though I suspect that is outside HE's capabilities! I will recommend Highland Experience without hesitation to anyone thinking of going to Scotland.
