Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) FAQs: Your Guide to Stress-Free Travel to the UK

Planning a trip to Scotland or the UK? There’s an essential new step to add to your travel checklist: the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). Designed to enhance border security and streamline the immigration process, the ETA is a digital travel requirement for many visitors. This guide covers everything you need to know about the UK’s ETA system, ensuring a smooth journey.

What is the UK’s Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)?

The ETA is a digital travel permission required for visitors to the UK who don’t currently need a visa for short stays or who lack UK immigration status. It is not a visa and doesn’t guarantee entry—it only authorises travel to the UK. The ETA is electronically linked to your passport and allows multiple visits of up to six months each over two years or until your passport expires.

Who Needs an ETA?

Most travellers to the UK, except British and Irish citizens, will need an ETA. Here’s a breakdown:

  • Currently required: Gulf Cooperation Council nationals.
  • From 8 January 2025: Eligible non-European nationals.
  • From 2 April 2025: Eligible European nationals.

Check the UK Government website for the latest updates and a list of eligible nationalities.

When Does the ETA Scheme Start?

The phased rollout began in November 2023, with key dates to note:

  • 15 November 2023: Qatari nationals first required an ETA.
  • 22 February 2024: Nationals from Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE added.
  • 5 March 2025: Eligible Europeans can apply.
  • 2 April 2025: All eligible travellers must have an ETA to visit the UK.

How Can You Apply for an ETA?

Applying for an ETA is quick and straightforward. You can apply online via GOV.UK or through the ‘UK ETA’ app, available on Google Play and the App Store.

What You’ll Need:

  • A valid passport.
  • A digital passport-style photo that meets UK standards.
  • Travel details.
  • Payment of the £10 fee.

Application Process:

  1. Provide contact and passport details.
  2. Upload a compliant digital photo.
  3. Answer a set of questions.
  4. Submit and pay the fee.

Processing Time:
Most decisions are issued within three working days, but app users may receive faster responses.

Important: You must travel using the passport linked to your ETA application.

How Much Does an ETA Cost?

The ETA fee is currently £10 per application and permits multiple trips to the UK within its validity period. This makes it an affordable and convenient way to secure travel authorisation.

What Happens if You Travel Without an ETA?

Travelling to the UK without an ETA may result in being denied boarding by airlines or entry by UK Border Force officials. Carriers are also subject to fines for non-compliance, so ensure you apply in advance.

Why is the ETA Being Introduced?

The UK’s ETA system aligns with global practices like the US ESTA and Australia’s ETA, enhancing security and ensuring only eligible visitors enter the UK. This helps prevent potential threats while creating a more efficient, digital border process.

For How Long is an ETA Valid?

Once approved, the ETA is valid for two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. This means you can make multiple trips to the UK without needing to reapply during this period.

Can an ETA Application Be Refused?

Yes, an application can be denied for reasons such as incomplete information, past immigration violations, or security concerns. If your application is refused, you will be informed of the reason, and in most cases, you can reapply after addressing the issue.
